The Schooner Western Union Maritime Museum Key West Florida
|
The Schooner Western Union is unlike other sailing vessels in Key West. It is authentic and holds a prestigious place on
the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in Key West in 1939, she is the oldest working wooden schooner in the United States. Constructed to tend the
Western Union cable lines, today she offers a mix of romance, fun, and excitement that could only be offered by
this premier Historic Sailing Vessel and Maritime Museum of the Florida Keys.
Built in the great tradition of the wrecking vessels that were used in Key West in the 1800's, the 130 ft. Schooner Western
Union has three distinctions.
She is:
* the last example of a traditional American coasting schooner made in the U.S
* the last sailing cable ship on earth.
* the last tall ship constructed in Key West.
